The Worry Dump

"Tell me everything your brain is thinking about", and the re-emergences stop.

Ages 4–103–8 min1 kidsHousehold items

Before lights out, give the child 3–4 minutes to externalise every thought. Parent listens without commenting, suggesting, or fixing. The brain doesn't need solutions. It needs to be emptied. Children who re-emerge with 'one more thing' are usually running a mental loop that hasn't been spoken out loud.

How to do it

  1. 1"Tell me everything your brain is thinking about right now. Anything at all."
  2. 2Child talks. You listen. No reacting, fixing, or redirecting. Just receive it.
  3. 3When they finish: 'Is that everything?' Usually it is.
  4. 4'I've got all of that. You can let it go now.' Then leave.

Variations

  • **Korb-Tür:** If they refuse or say "nothing": "Okay. I'm listening anyway." Stay quiet. Most fill the silence.
  • **Ausstieg:** When they finish: "I've got all of that. You can let it go now." Leave. Don't solve anything. The brain just needed to empty.

💡 Parent tip

The hardest part is not fixing. A worry named and not solved feels more heard than one named and instantly fixed. Just receive it.

What your child develops

  • Emotional externalisationspeaking thoughts out loud reduces their cognitive weight
  • Anxiety regulationthe loop breaks when it's been received by another person
  • Trust buildingbeing genuinely heard without being fixed creates lasting safety
