The Brave Thought

"Think of one thing you're not afraid of", then build the list from there.

Ages 4–93–8 min1 kidsHousehold items

A simple cognitive redirection: instead of dismissing the fear, invite the child to name something safe. Then another. Build a short mental inventory. The brain shifts its focus toward what is present and known-safe. It doesn't deny the fear. It expands the field of what's also true.

How to do it

  1. 1"What's one thing in this room you're definitely not scared of?"
  2. 2"Good. What's another?" Keep going until you have five things.
  3. 3Small answers are fine — the lamp, the blanket, the floor. The inventory is what matters.
  4. 4"Those five things are here all night." Let that land. Then leave.

Variations

  • **Korb-Tür:** If they say "nothing": "Okay, the floor. You're standing on it. That one's safe." Start small. Build the list together.
  • **Ausstieg:** After five things: "Those five things are here all night." Let that land. Then leave.

💡 Parent tip

Don't suggest items yourself. The ones the child names carry far more weight. Their safety list belongs to them.

What your child develops

  • Attention redirectionshifting focus from threat to safety without denying either
  • Building a safety inventorya repeatable internal tool the child can use independently
  • Gradual self-reliancemany children can guide themselves through it by around age 6
