At the start of the bedtime window, everyone in the house drops to a whisper. No other technique required. Lowered vocal volume immediately changes the room's energy. The parent models it first. The child matches within minutes. No enforcement needed.
How to do it
- 1"From now until morning — whispers only."
- 2Drop to a whisper immediately and stay there, regardless of what the child does.
- 3Don't enforce it. Model it. They'll match your volume within a few minutes.
- 4All adults in the house join. It only works if the whole room gets quieter.
Variations
- **Korb-Tür:** If they speak at full volume: Don't react or enforce. Stay in whisper yourself. Just whisper back: "Whisper mode, remember?" Model it. Don't demand it.
- **Ausstieg:** Model whispering through the entire routine. When lights are out, the rule continues naturally. They follow your volume.
💡 Parent tip
Your whisper is the regulator. If you're asking them to whisper while speaking at full volume yourself, it doesn't work. Drop your voice first and hold it there.
What your child develops
- Nervous system regulation — lowered vocal volume physically signals safety and rest to the body
- Mirroring — children automatically match the energy level of the adults around them
- Environmental priming — consistent vocal cues become associated with sleep over time
