The Night Light Story

Name the shadow on the ceiling and give it a job, and the dark becomes friendly.

Ages 2–75–10 min1 kidsHousehold items

Light from a night light or gap under a door casts shadows and shapes on the ceiling. Point to one. Name it together. Give it a role: a sleeping guardian, a friendly cloud, a snoring giant. The room's ambience stops being an unknown threat and becomes a known, inhabited place.

What you need

  • night light or dim lamp (already in the room)

How to do it

  1. 1"Look at the ceiling. What do you see in the shadows?"
  2. 2"What does that look like?" Let the child name it first. Whatever they say, work with it.
  3. 3Give it a job: a sleeping guardian, a friendly cloud, a snoring giant who keeps watch.
  4. 4Call it by name on subsequent nights. The familiarity is the whole point.

Variations

  • **Korb-Tür:** If they say it looks scary: "Okay, then we name it so it's not scary. What should we call it?" Let them name it. Once named, it's known.
  • **Ausstieg:** Call it by name every night. "There's your [name]. Keeping watch." The consistency is the whole point.

💡 Parent tip

Let the child name the shapes. Their names carry more weight than yours. Once named, use that name every night. The consistency builds a reliable sense of guardianship.
