Would You Rather

No right answer, no wrong answer. Just an opinion and the reason behind it.

Ages 3–1410–40 min2–5 kidsHousehold items

Take turns posing 'Would you rather...' dilemmas. Each player must answer AND explain their reasoning. The game produces genuine conversation about values, fears, and preferences in a low-stakes format that works with children from 3 to 14.

How to do it

  1. 1Pose a dilemma: would you rather always have to whisper, or always have to shout?
  2. 2Everyone answers. Everyone gives a reason. The reason is the whole point.
  3. 3Debate the reasoning, not the choice. There are no wrong answers here.
  4. 4Rotate who asks next. Let the strangest questions stand without explanation.

Variations

  • If they won't answer, offer a multiple-choice version instead — 'Would you rather have ice cream or pizza?' — choice cuts the pressure.
  • How it ends: end after five questions, not when someone loses interest — keep it snappy, not a grind.

💡 Parent tip

The best questions are close calls, not obvious ones. 'Would you rather always be 10 minutes early or always be 10 minutes late?' produces real debate.

What your child develops

  • Perspective-takingunderstanding that others make different choices for coherent reasons
  • Reasoning under uncertaintyexplaining a preference without certainty
  • Vocabularyarticulating 'because' requires more words than stating a preference
