Story Chain

One sentence each, and by the end you're halfway across the galaxy fighting cheese monsters.

Ages 4–1010–30 min2–5 kidsHousehold items

The simplest group storytelling game: one sentence to start, one sentence each to continue. No wrong answers, no rules, no way to fail. The story surprises everyone including the people making it.

How to do it

  1. 1Player 1 opens with one sentence: something happens to someone, somewhere.
  2. 2Player 2 continues with exactly one sentence. Not two. Not a paragraph. One.
  3. 3Nobody ends the story without the whole group agreeing. This rule is the whole structure.
  4. 4When it's time: one final sentence each, in order. Then it's done.

Variations

  • If someone refuses to add a sentence, the next player continues — the story keeps moving regardless.
  • When it feels right, announce: 'Two more sentences each, then we finish.' The end feels deliberate, not abandoned.

💡 Parent tip

If the story goes completely off the rails. And it will. That's the best part. Resist every urge to correct the direction.
