Alphabet Story

A story where every sentence starts with the next letter of the alphabet, and somehow it always ends with a penguin.

Ages 5–1210–25 min2–4 kidsHousehold items

Collaborative storytelling where each sentence must start with the next letter of the alphabet. A: 'A dog walked into a shop.' B: 'Behind the counter was a very surprised cat.' The constraint creates comedy and keeps both players equally invested.

How to do it

  1. 1First player starts with A — one sentence that opens a story.
  2. 2Next player continues with B. The story must pick up where the last sentence ended.
  3. 3Go through the alphabet. X and Z demand creativity. That is the whole point.
  4. 4Variation: play backwards from Z to A once you are good at it.

Variations

  • If the alphabet constraint feels too hard, switch to 'each sentence just has to continue the story, no letter rule' — remove the pressure, keep the collaboration.
  • How it ends: read the whole story aloud one final time at arrival, celebrate how wild it got, then close it with 'and they all went home'.

💡 Parent tip

When they hit Q, accept 'Quite' or 'Quickly' as sentence starters. The constraint is supposed to be hard. Allow creative cheats for the really difficult letters.
