The Tape Town

One roll of masking tape, the living room floor, and 60-90 minutes of self-directed play.

Hand over a roll of masking tape: 'Make a town on the floor. Roads, buildings, a river. Whatever you want. The whole floor is yours.' One sentence. One tape roll. Zero further involvement. Child lays roads, marks buildings, creates districts, and populates the town with small toys from around the house. Masking tape peels off without damage. Children engage with tape towns for 60-90 minutes without interruption because a town is open-ended. There is always another road to add, another building to place, another district to zone.

What you need

  • One roll of masking tape
  • Small toys from around the house (optional)

How to do it

  1. 1Hand over a roll of masking tape. Make a town on the floor. Roads, buildings, whatever you want. The whole floor is yours.
  2. 2Leave immediately. Do not look at the town until invited.
  3. 3Let it stay up as long as they're using it. A good town takes two hours to outgrow.

Variations

  • If they don't want to build: tear off a few strips and lay the first road yourself, then leave — most children can't resist finishing a road that's already started.
  • How it ends: the town stays up until they're done with it — no cleanup deadline forces the ending.

💡 Parent tip

Give the full floor, not a designated corner. The scale of the permission determines the scale of the engagement. 'A small area in the corner' produces a 20-minute town. 'The whole floor' produces a 90-minute one.

What your child develops

  • Spatial planning — designing a town requires thinking about layout, scale, and the relationship between elements
  • World-building — populating a town with characters and stories is narrative development in physical space
  • Self-regulated engagement — no defined endpoint means the child sets their own stopping point, building intrinsic motivation and self-direction

Safety notes

  • Use masking tape only — it peels cleanly from most floor surfaces. Painter's tape is even gentler on delicate finishes.
