Bubble Wrap Stomp

A sheet of bubble wrap on the floor, and every step becomes a tiny satisfying explosion underfoot.

Ages 1–45–15 min1–3 kidsHousehold items

A length of bubble wrap taped or laid flat on the floor. Child stomps, jumps, or crawls across it to pop the bubbles. Loud, physical, and self-limiting - once it's popped, the activity ends itself.

What you need

  • a sheet of bubble wrap

How to do it

  1. 1Lay the bubble wrap flat: 'Listen to what happens when you step on this.'
  2. 2Stomp one bubble yourself first, loudly: 'Pop!'
  3. 3Let them find their own way across - stomping, jumping, or sitting and pressing with their hands all count.
  4. 4Lay a fresh piece down if they want to keep going after the first sheet is flat.

Variations

  • If the sound startles them - pop a few bubbles slowly with your fingers first, at a distance, so they can watch before it's under their own feet.
  • 'Find the last three bubbles and then we're done.' Point out a few unpopped spots specifically so the end has a visible finish line.

💡 Parent tip

Save bubble wrap from deliveries specifically for this - it costs nothing and toddlers rarely tire of the sound before the sheet runs out.

What your child develops

  • Sensory feedback - the combined sound, resistance, and give of popping bubbles offers strong proprioceptive input
  • Gross motor practice - stomping and jumping with control across an uneven surface builds balance and coordination
  • Cause and effect - direct, immediate, loud feedback for a physical action

Safety notes

  • Popped bubble wrap can create small plastic fragments - supervise closely with children who still put things in their mouths, and dispose of the sheet once flattened.
