Snack on the table before the child arrives. No 'are you hungry?', no 'how was school?', no instruction. The snack is just there. Child eats when ready. Parent asks nothing for 10 minutes. The intervention is the anticipation of a need and the absence of a question. It communicates: I knew you'd be hungry, and nothing is required of you. The neurological effect of eating without being questioned is measurably different from eating while being asked about the day.
What you need
- Snack prepared in advance
How to do it
- 1'[Say nothing.]' The snack is already on the table—that's the entire greeting.
- 2When they walk in: gesture toward it or let their gaze find it. It's self-evident.
- 3Ask nothing for at least 10 minutes. The whole point is the absence of a question.
Variations
- If they walk past it or say they're not hungry — don't offer again. Leave it there and say nothing; it gets eaten in its own time, or it doesn't, and either way the message already landed.
- How it ends: the empty plate is the natural close — clear it as part of moving to whatever's next, not as a verbal 'okay, snack time's over.'
💡 Parent tip
The snack only works if the silence comes with it. The hardest part is the 10 minutes of not asking. This one only works if it's set up in advance — if the child is already overwhelmed and there's no snack ready, skip straight to something physical like The 30-Second Hold or The Floor Drop instead.
What your child develops
- Anticipatory attunement — having something ready before the child asks communicates awareness of their needs without interrogation
- Glucose restoration — carbohydrate intake after school supports prefrontal recovery from cognitive depletion
