The Sick Day Map

Draw the place you most wish you could go right now. Real or completely invented.

Ages 4–1020–40 min1 kids

Child draws a map of somewhere they wish they could be instead of sick at home. The beach, a pirate island, a magical forest, grandma's garden, a city on the moon. Works lying down with a clipboard. The fantasy of being elsewhere when stuck is not escapism. It's a genuine coping mechanism. Imagining a place in enough detail to map it requires pleasantly absorbing mental effort that competes with physical discomfort. A good map takes 20-40 minutes and invites return visits to add more detail.

What you need

  • Paper clipped to a hardback book or clipboard
  • Pencil
  • Colored pencils

How to do it

  1. 1Hand over a clipboard and paper. Hardback book underneath if they're lying down.
  2. 2Draw a map of the place you most wish you could be right now. Real or completely invented.
  3. 3Add everything that's there. Leave without explaining further. Return only when invited.

Variations

  • If they push the clipboard away: start sketching your own dream place quietly beside them without asking them to join — most start drawing within a minute. If still no: 'If you could teleport anywhere right now, where would you go?' Wait for their answer, don't suggest one.
  • How it ends: when they hand it to you, ask one question about the place, then say 'we'll add more tomorrow' and set it aside — no pressure to finish.

💡 Parent tip

If they're stuck: 'If you could teleport anywhere right now, where would you go?' The answer is their map. Don't suggest a place. Wait for theirs.

What your child develops

  • Spatial reasoningmap-making requires deciding on scale, orientation, and the relationship between places
  • Imaginative copingconstructing a desired environment in detail is a genuine pain-management technique used in pediatric care settings
  • Narrative world-buildingmaps often become the foundation for stories and role play once the child recovers
