The Long Build

One photograph of something to build. No other instructions.

Ages 5–1245–120 min1–2 kids

Print or write on a card a photograph or simple drawing of something the child could realistically build from their materials: a bridge, a tower, a marble maze, a vehicle. Place it next to the building materials and say only: 'Can you build this?' The photograph creates a reference that sustains work across multiple attempts. Children tear down and rebuild rather than abandon, because the target is visible and specific.

What you need

  • Building materials (blocks, LEGO, or recyclables)
  • One printed photograph or hand-drawn card of a target structure

How to do it

  1. 1Find a photograph of something buildable — a bridge, a tower, a marble run, challenging but achievable — place it beside the building materials, then say: "Can you build this?"
  2. 2Leave. They'll tear it down and start again — that's the point. Accept any version of the build.

Variations

  • If they take one look and say it's too hard: start building the base yourself, slowly, without commentary — most kids move in to fix or take over what you've started within a couple minutes.
  • Built-in ending: 'let's take a picture of it before we're done for today' turns a pause into a save point, not a stop — the build can be resumed exactly where it left off.

💡 Parent tip

Choose structures with achievable challenges. A bridge, not the Eiffel Tower. The child should get meaningfully close within 20 minutes. That first partial success is what sustains the next hour. Having a target photo ready ahead of time is what makes this fast to pull out — if nothing's prepped, reach for The Build Brief instead for something you can write on the spot.
