The House Museum

Curate five favorite objects from around the house into an exhibition, then give a guided tour.

Ages 5–1030–60 min1–2 kids

Child chooses five objects from anywhere in the house — a toy, a garden rock, a spoon, anything. Each gets a card with a title and one fact, real or invented, written or dictated. The objects are arranged on a shelf, table, or windowsill as an exhibition. When it's ready, the child gives a guided tour, one object at a time, in their best museum-guide voice — a slow, sustained project with a real payoff at the end.

What you need

  • index cards or paper cut into cards
  • pencil or marker
  • 5 household objects

How to do it

  1. 1Say it like an invitation: "Find five objects from anywhere in the house that you think deserve their own museum."
  2. 2For each object, write or dictate a title and one fact — real or invented, both count equally.
  3. 3Arrange the five objects in a row on a shelf, windowsill, or table, with their cards propped in front of them.
  4. 4When it's ready, they lead you through the exhibition one object at a time, in their best museum-guide voice.

Variations

  • If they can't decide what to write: ask 'why is this one special?' and write down their answer exactly as they say it — their own words are always more interesting than a fact from a book.
  • How it ends: the guided tour itself is the natural close — clap when it's over, and leave the exhibition up for the rest of the day instead of packing it away immediately.

💡 Parent tip

Ask real questions during the tour — 'how did you find this one?' — instead of just praising. It turns the tour into a conversation instead of a performance.

What your child develops

  • Presentation confidenceleading an adult through prepared material builds public-speaking comfort in a low-stakes setting
