Variations
- If they say 'I don't know what to build': don't offer ideas — pick up a piece of cardboard yourself and start cutting something small and silly, narrating as you go, then set it down and step back.
- Built-in ending: 'Workshop's closing for today, but it'll still be here tomorrow' keeps an unfinished build from feeling like failure — stash it somewhere visible instead of putting it fully away.
💡 Parent tip
Resist the urge to help. The crooked wall with the too-small door is part of the process. Cardboard play that involves adult 'helping' becomes adult-directed. The child disengages within minutes. This works best when you've already got a box set aside — keep one in the garage or closet for exactly this moment.
