The Blind Architect

One child has the picture, one has the blocks, and they need each other to build it.

Ages 5–1015–30 min2 kids

One child holds a reference image of a structure. The other has the building materials. The architect gives verbal instructions only; the builder executes without seeing the reference. The constraint is enforced: architect cannot touch the materials, builder cannot look at the image. The role structure removes 'I want to do it my way' because each child has exactly one job and neither can cheat their way into the other's.

What you need

  • Building blocks or LEGO
  • One reference image or simple drawing (parent draws in advance)

How to do it

  1. 1Draw a simple structure on a card — a tower, an L-shape, an arch.
  2. 2Architect gets the card. Builder gets the blocks. They cannot swap.
  3. 3Architect: describe it. Builder: build exactly what you're told. No peeking, no touching the other's job.
  4. 4Compare when done. Switch roles. Make the next one harder.

Variations

  • If the reluctant one refuses to start: let them be builder first, where following instructions feels less exposed than giving them.
  • How it ends: line up the finished builds next to the reference cards like a small gallery and let them vote on the closest match.
  • This one builds cooperation before it's needed. For an active fight, use The Separate Reset (B006-20) instead.

💡 Parent tip

Prepare 3–4 reference cards with increasing complexity before the session. The difficulty ladder keeps them playing through multiple rounds without needing to renegotiate what to do next.

  • Communication precision — the architect must translate a visual into clear verbal instructions
  • Listening and following directions — the builder executes without interpretation
  • Collaborative repair — when a step fails, both children must negotiate the fix

Safety notes

  • Small LEGO pieces pose a choking hazard for children under 3.
