The Big Drink

A full glass of water at the door. Drink it before shoes are even off.

Ages 5–101 min1–3 kidsHousehold items

Children are chronically mildly dehydrated by the end of the school day. School rarely provides sufficient drinking opportunity, and the cognitive demands of the day increase water loss. A glass of water at the door, drunk before anything else, addresses this before it compounds. Mild dehydration impairs attention and working memory by measurable amounts. Drinking first means the decompression that follows is working with a better-hydrated brain. Thirty seconds.

What you need

  • Full glass of water, ready at the door

How to do it

  1. 1'Drink this first.' Cold water is ready at the door.
  2. 2No questions while they drink.
  3. 3Set the glass aside and proceed to snack or next activity.

Variations

  • If they refuse the water — don't offer again. Leave it on the table; they'll often return to it in their own time.
  • How it ends: glass empty or half-empty, either is complete. Set it aside and move to snack or next thing.

💡 Parent tip

Cold water. Warm or room-temperature water is less immediately satisfying after a physically demanding school day.

What your child develops
