Syllable Chain

The last syllable of your word becomes the first syllable of mine, and the chain cannot break.

Ages 6–125–20 min2–6 kidsHousehold items

Say any word aloud. The next player immediately starts their word with the last syllable of the previous one. 'Window' becomes 'Downtown.' No repeating words. Five seconds to answer, or you're out. Fast, verbal, zero setup.

How to do it

  1. 1First player says any word. The last syllable becomes the first syllable of the next word.
  2. 2Window ends in dow. Next player starts with dow: downtown. No pausing, five seconds to answer.
  3. 3No repeating words already in the chain.
  4. 4When it breaks, start again with a new word. The chain is the challenge.

Variations

  • If they freeze on the timer, make it slower — 'take 10 seconds instead' — slower pace helps some kids think.
  • How it ends: when the chain breaks, acknowledge it and start fresh immediately with a new word — no dwelling on failure.

💡 Parent tip

Multi-syllable starting words are harder than short ones. 'Elephant' is easier to continue than 'fun.' Notice whether children pick strategically to block others or simply pick what they know first — both are interesting.
