Impossible List

Name every yellow food you can think of — two minutes, no stopping, paper optional.

Ages 5–105–20 min1–2 kidsHousehold items

Parent names a category; the sick child calls out as many items as possible within two minutes without pausing. Every food that's yellow. Every animal that can swim. Every word that rhymes with cat. The list can be spoken aloud or written down, and kept to beat on the next difficult day. No repetitions allowed — the child has to keep reaching for less obvious answers.

What you need

  • paper and pencil (optional)

How to do it

  1. 1Call a category: every yellow food you can think of. Two minutes. No stopping.
  2. 2Child names as many as possible. Count out loud or write the number down.
  3. 3Try a new category. Try to beat the previous count. Keep the record for the next sick day.

Variations

  • If two minutes feels like pressure: drop the timer and just see how many they can name — no clock needed.
  • How it ends: one category is enough for a full round — 'we'll beat that number next time' ends it without a second round required.

💡 Parent tip

Choose categories at the edge of the child's knowledge — not too easy, not impossible. 'Every type of weather' is just right for most 7-year-olds. 'Every country in South America' is too hard. 'Every colour' is too easy. The category that produces about 10–15 items in two minutes is optimal.

What your child develops

  • Semantic fluencyrapid category retrieval is a measure of how words are organised in long-term memory
  • Working memory under time pressureholding the category rule while generating words within it
  • Self-competitionbeating a previous personal count is inherently motivating and requires no external comparison
