Crazy Place Name Spotter

Every road sign is a potential point — whoever spots the funniest town name before the motorway wins.

Ages 5–1210–90 min1–4 kidsHousehold items

Everyone watches for unusual or funny place names on road signs. First to call one out wins a point. Real signs only, no repeats. Tying the game to the passing landscape gives the journey a purpose — and some place names are genuinely worth the wait.

How to do it

  1. 1Watch every sign. First to call out a genuinely funny place name wins a point. Real signs only.
  2. 2If anyone disputes it, the caller argues their case. The parent decides.
  3. 3Advanced: categories — best animal name, longest name, most suspicious name.
  4. 4At arrival, announce the single best name of the whole journey.

Variations

  • If they don't spot funny names, narrate the ones you see aloud — 'oh, Boring, Kentucky — that's brilliant' — models the game without pressure.
  • How it ends: at arrival, name the top-three funniest names collectively, then close it — captures the joy without a final score.

💡 Parent tip

When a funny name comes up, ask: 'Why do you think it's called that?' Most place names have real historical reasons. The question opens a small history lesson neither of you knew you wanted, and it arrives at exactly the right moment.
