Eight parts flour to one part vegetable oil, mixed by hand into a soft, mouldable dough that holds a shape briefly and crumbles apart. Scooped, squeezed, and pressed into cups or moulds. A completely different texture from any other sensory material in the house.
What you need
- 8 cups flour
- 1 cup vegetable oil
- large bin or tray
- cups or moulds
How to do it
- 1Mix flour and oil in the bin together: 'Help me stir - feel how it's changing.'
- 2Hand them a fistful once it's ready: 'Squeeze it as hard as you can.'
- 3Show them how to press it into a cup and tip it out to hold its shape.
- 4Let them crumble, rebuild, and mix in any moulds or spoons they want.
Variations
- If the texture feels strange at first - start with just one finger poked in, rather than a full hand grab. Let curiosity build at their own pace.
- 'Last shape, then it goes back in the bin for next time.' Press one final mould together, then scoop it all back into a sealed container to reuse.
💡 Parent tip
Store it in a sealed container or bag between uses - cloud dough keeps for weeks and gets better (less crumbly) the more it's handled.
What your child develops
- Tactile processing - a texture that behaves differently under different pressure (holds shape when packed, crumbles when loose) builds sophisticated sensory discrimination
- Cause and effect - squeeze force directly determines whether it holds together or falls apart
- Fine motor strength - packing, scooping, and moulding builds hand and finger strength used later for writing
Safety notes
- Not edible - supervise closely with children who still mouth materials, and use the yogurt paint recipe (B019-02) instead if that's a concern.
