Category Sprint

Name everything in a category in 60 seconds — and the categories only get stranger.

Ages 5–1210–25 min2–6 kidsHousehold items

One player names a category. Everyone has sixty seconds to name as many things in it as possible. Answers only one player gave score a point. Whoever scores most names the next category. The push toward unusual answers is where the real competition happens.

How to do it

  1. 1Name a category. Set a timer for 60 seconds. Everyone thinks of as many things in it as possible.
  2. 2When time is up, compare. Answers only one person gave score a point. Shared answers cancel.
  3. 3Whoever scored most names the next category.
  4. 4The push toward unusual answers is where the real competition starts.

Variations

  • If they refuse or freeze, switch to collaborative mode — both call out things in the category, no winning, just listing.
  • How it ends: count the total at the end, celebrate the unusual ones, and stop — let it close naturally without announcing a winner.

💡 Parent tip

The most interesting categories are slightly absurd ones. 'Things a pirate would be scared of' produces better conversation than 'types of animal'. Let the child make the categories once they understand the game.

What your child develops

  • Semantic fluencyrapid retrieval from a mental category is a core language processing skill
  • Vocabulary breadththe pressure to find less obvious items pulls in peripheral vocabulary
  • Category formationdeciding whether something belongs in a category builds classification thinking
