Trace hands and feet with sidewalk chalk along a path, building a colourful trail across the driveway or sidewalk. Follow the trail by stepping and placing hands exactly where each shape was drawn.
What you need
- sidewalk chalk
How to do it
- 1Trace around a hand or foot with chalk on the pavement.
- 2Move along and trace the next shape a step or two further on, building a winding trail.
- 3Follow the finished trail, placing hands and feet exactly on the traced shapes.
- 4Add colour by filling in each traced shape once the trail is complete.
Variations
- If chalk isn't available: a stick dragged through dirt or sand can trace the same shapes.
- How it ends: a final walk down the whole trail, hands and feet matching every shape, closes the activity.
💡 Parent tip
Trace your own hand alongside theirs at least once -- comparing sizes side by side is often the moment that gets the biggest laugh.
What your child develops
- Fine motor tracing — following the outline of a hand or foot with chalk builds control
- Gross motor placement — stepping precisely onto a traced shape trains coordination
- Body awareness — comparing hand and foot sizes across the trail builds a sense of scale
