The Three Wishes

There's a genie lamp under the table. 3 wishes each, and no repeating what anyone else says.

Ages 4–1010–15 min2–6 kidsHousehold items

'You just found a genie lamp under this table. 3 wishes each. Nobody can wish for the same thing.' Go around the table. The no-repeating rule means later turns require genuinely different thinking which is where the interesting wishes emerge. Purely verbal, instantly startable, runs 10-15 minutes without additional prompting.

How to do it

  1. 1"You just found a genie lamp under this table. Three wishes each. Nobody repeats. I'll start with my first wish."
  2. 2Go around the table. The no-repeating rule is what makes it interesting — later turns have to work harder.
  3. 3Ask: which wish would actually change your life the most?

Variations

  • If they won't play: make all three of your own wishes out loud, slowly, leaving a real pause after each one — the pause is the invitation, not a follow-up question.
  • How it ends: the last wish is declared 'for right now, in this restaurant' — which closes the loop naturally right as the food or the check arrives.

💡 Parent tip

Go last. If you go first with 'world peace', you close off half the good options. Going last lets the child's answers set the tone. This card needs a child ready to talk and imagine, so it builds prevention rather than working in the moment things fall apart. Mid-meltdown, reach for The Coin Architecture instead: zero setup, works with hands, not words.

What your child develops

  • Desire articulationnaming what you most want requires examining your actual priorities
  • Creative constraintthe no-repeating rule forces genuinely individual responses rather than socially expected answers
