Pick a stranger at another table. Each person quietly suggests one name. Vote on which fits best. Then: give them a pet. Give them a job. Give them one secret. Four questions answered in whispers about a person you know nothing about. Observation plus narrative plus social consideration. A complete 5-10 minute engagement with no materials.
How to do it
- 1"See that person at the other table? Let's whisper a name for them. I'm thinking... Bernard."
- 2Everyone whispers their own name guess. Vote on which fits best.
- 3Keep going: what's their job, their pet, their one secret?
Variations
- If they say no: start narrating the stranger's story yourself in a whisper, alone, pausing after each detail so joining in feels easy rather than requested.
- How it ends: give the stranger a one-line happy ending — 'and their food came out fast and they lived happily' — right as your own food arrives, so the fiction closes itself.
💡 Parent tip
Establish 'kind stories only' before starting. Redirect toward curious and interesting rather than mocking. This needs a child able to observe and invent quietly, so it's a prevention tool, not a mid-crisis one. When things have already boiled over, use The Table Tap Code instead: no talking needed, just tapping back.
What your child develops
- Social imagination — projecting an identity onto a stranger from minimal cues is a foundational empathy skill
- Observational inference — guessing a name or job from visible appearance requires reading real social signals
Safety notes
- Keep whispered. Do not point. This is private storytelling, not audible commentary about the person.
