The Popsicle Stick Bridge

Glue or weave craft sticks into a small bridge, then test how many coins it can hold before it gives way.

Ages 4–925–45 min1–3 kids

Build a small bridge from craft sticks, either glued into a simple frame or woven without glue for a quick version, spanning a gap between two books or blocks. Test its strength by loading small coins or blocks onto it, one at a time, until it buckles.

What you need

  • craft sticks
  • glue (optional)
  • small coins or blocks for testing

How to do it

  1. 1Set two books or blocks a short distance apart as the bridge's supports.
  2. 2Lay craft sticks across the gap, weaving or gluing them into a simple flat or lattice structure.
  3. 3"How much weight do you think it can hold?" Load coins or small blocks onto the middle, one at a time.
  4. 4Count how many it holds before it bends or breaks, then try a stronger design if there's time to rebuild.

Variations

  • If glue drying time is a problem: a woven, glue-free version tests just as well and can be built and tested in one sitting.
  • How it ends: recording the final weight it held (a number on paper) gives the build a clear, satisfying result.

💡 Parent tip

Let a design fail completely at least once — a bridge that visibly buckles teaches more than one that holds on the first try.
