How to do it
- 1Set two books or blocks a short distance apart as the bridge's supports.
- 2Lay craft sticks across the gap, weaving or gluing them into a simple flat or lattice structure.
- 3"How much weight do you think it can hold?" Load coins or small blocks onto the middle, one at a time.
- 4Count how many it holds before it bends or breaks, then try a stronger design if there's time to rebuild.
Variations
- If glue drying time is a problem: a woven, glue-free version tests just as well and can be built and tested in one sitting.
- How it ends: recording the final weight it held (a number on paper) gives the build a clear, satisfying result.

Let a design fail completely at least once — a bridge that visibly buckles teaches more than one that holds on the first try.
