Sprinkle pepper on the surface of a bowl of water. It floats and sits still. Touch the surface with a soapy fingertip. The pepper instantly races to the edges. Soap breaks surface tension. The demo is striking enough to be worth doing twice.
What you need
- bowl of water
- black pepper
- a bar of soap or drop of washing-up liquid
How to do it
- 1Watch what happens to the pepper when I touch it.
- 2Touch the surface with a dry finger. Nothing happens. Let them try.
- 3Touch the surface with a soapy fingertip. The pepper races to the edges instantly.
- 4Reset by rinsing the bowl. Let them do it themselves. Then explain why.
Variations
- Korb-Tür: If they won't touch it — just watch you do the trick. They can predict what will happen. Touching is optional.
- Ausstieg: One final pepper explosion. Then pour the bowl into the bath. 'The whole bath gets a little soap magic.' Done.
💡 Parent tip
Do the demonstration first without explaining. Let them predict what will happen. The surprise of the instant result is what makes it memorable.
What your child develops
- Surface tension — water has an elastic 'skin' that pepper rests on
- How soap works — soap disrupts surface tension, which is why it cleans
- Dramatic demonstration — fast and visible, making abstract chemistry concrete
Safety notes
- Keep pepper away from eyes.
