Pile every cushion in the house into a single tall, wobbly mountain in the middle of the floor. Climb to the top, tumble off onto a soft landing spot, and rebuild the mountain again for another ascent.
What you need
- couch cushions and floor pillows
How to do it
- 1Stack cushions into the tallest stable mountain the pile allows.
- 2"Climb to the top and jump off onto the soft spot!"
- 3Let them rebuild the mountain themselves between climbs -- the stacking is part of the workout.
- 4Change the mountain's shape each round to keep the climb slightly different.
Variations
- If a tall stack feels unsteady: keep it low and wide instead, so the climb is gentler but still active.
- How it ends: one last climb-and-jump, then rebuilding the couch together closes the game.
💡 Parent tip
Stay within arm's reach for every climb -- this one is about total physical freedom with a safety net right beside them.
What your child develops
- Gross motor strength — climbing an unstable surface builds core and leg power
- Risk judgment at toddler scale — deciding how to climb something that shifts underfoot
- Cause and effect — restacking after each tumble shows how a structure holds or falls
Safety notes
- Keep hard furniture corners clear of the landing area. Supervise closely and stay within arm's reach during climbs.
