How to do it
- 1An adult dissolves as much salt or sugar as possible into a jar of hot water, stirring until no more will dissolve.
- 2Tie a piece of string to a pencil and lower it into the jar so it hangs without touching the sides or bottom.
- 3Set the jar on a windowsill where it won't be disturbed.
- 4Check in each day, noting and sketching how the crystals have grown since the last look.
Variations
- If a full week feels too long: sugar crystals often form visibly faster than salt, for a slightly quicker payoff.
- How it ends: once growth has slowed, removing and admiring the finished crystal string closes the project.
💡 Parent tip
An adult should handle the hot water step -- once the jar has cooled, the rest of the project is entirely hands-off and safe for daily unsupervised check-ins.
