Strip the couch and floor pillows into one big soft landscape on the living room floor. Crawl, climb, and roll across it without letting hands or knees touch bare floor — a full physical workout that also doubles as a legitimate reason to make a mess.
What you need
- couch cushions and floor pillows
How to do it
- 1Pull every cushion and pillow onto the floor and arrange them into a loose, crossable landscape.
- 2"Get from this side of the room to the other without touching the bare floor!"
- 3Let them crawl, climb, or tumble however feels natural — there's no wrong technique.
- 4Rearrange the cushions into a new layout for a second round once the first gets easy.
Variations
- If the child wants a bigger challenge: add a soft toy they have to carry across without dropping it.
- How it ends: rebuilding the couch together turns cleanup into the last round of the game, not a separate chore.
💡 Parent tip
This is a genuinely good way to use ten minutes of a rainy afternoon without any setup beyond what's already in the room.
What your child develops
- Gross motor development — crawling and climbing over uneven, soft terrain builds core and limb strength
- Risk assessment at toddler scale — judging which cushion will hold their weight
- Spatial problem-solving — finding a path across an obstacle is an early planning skill
Safety notes
- Keep hard furniture corners clear of the crawl path. Supervise closely to prevent falls between cushions.
