Set a laundry basket a short distance away and toss bean bags (or rolled-up socks) underhand, aiming to land inside. Step back a pace after every successful hit and see how far the 'ladder' can go before missing.
What you need
- bean bags or rolled-up socks
- a laundry basket or bin
How to do it
- 1Set the basket a short, easy distance away to start.
- 2Toss underhand, aiming to land the bean bag inside the basket.
- 3"Every time you hit it, take one step back and try again — how far up the ladder can you climb?"
- 4Track the best distance reached and try to beat it on the next round.
Variations
- If bean bags aren't on hand: rolled-up socks work identically and cost nothing extra.
- How it ends: the final distance reached before a miss becomes the number to beat next time.
💡 Parent tip
Rolled-up socks are genuinely just as good as bought bean bags — no need to buy anything for this one.
What your child develops
- Hand-eye coordination — underhand tossing at a target builds throwing accuracy
- Incremental challenge — stepping back after every success creates a natural, self-paced difficulty curve
- Self-competition — beating a personal record needs no opponent to stay motivating
Safety notes
- Keep the throwing lane clear of breakables and other people.
