Sponge Relay

Transfer all the water from one bucket to the other using only a sponge — fastest team wins.

Ages 4–1210–25 min2–8 kidsHousehold items

Set two buckets five metres apart, one full and one empty. Each player soaks a sponge in the full bucket, runs to the empty one, and squeezes the water in. Repeat until time is called or the first bucket is empty. The team that transfers the most water wins, and everyone gets thoroughly soaked.

What you need

  • 2 buckets per team
  • 1 large sponge per team
  • water

How to do it

  1. 1Fill one bucket per team to the same level. Set the empty target bucket 5 metres away.
  2. 2On go: soak sponge, run, squeeze into target bucket, run back, pass to the next player.
  3. 3Play until the first bucket is empty — or run 3 minutes and measure what transferred.
  4. 4Variation: walk only, sponge balanced on the head. It becomes a completely different game.

Variations

  • If they're not interested: try a simpler version of the activity or move on without pressure. Interest often returns after a break.
  • "Best of three, then we cool down." After the final round, suggest a transition activity (water, rest, move to next thing).

💡 Parent tip

A warm day with access to a hose makes this the best version of this game. Get the buckets refilled and run it three times back-to-back: they'll want to test whether technique improved their score.

What your child develops

  • Volume intuitionchildren see that repeated small amounts add up to large transfers
  • Team coordinationthe handoff and overlap of running determine total efficiency
  • Physical engagement with water propertiesthe sponge saturates, so squeezing technique matters

Safety notes

  • Wet grass can be slippery. Ensure the running path is clear. Play in swimwear or old clothes.
