Clear a stretch of smooth, non-carpeted floor and put on some music. Slide, glide, and spin across it in socks like an ice rink, working on smooth glides, sudden stops, and spins between songs.
What you need
- socks
- music
How to do it
- 1Clear a stretch of smooth flooring — wood, tile, or laminate — of any obstacles or rugs.
- 2Put on music and demonstrate a simple glide: push off with one foot, slide, and stop with control.
- 3"Try a spin, try a sudden stop, try skating backward!" Let them invent their own moves.
- 4Take turns performing a 'routine' for each other if there's more than one skater.
Variations
- If the floor is too grippy for a good slide: try longer, smoother socks or slide on a folded towel underfoot instead.
- How it ends: a final freestyle 'performance' to one last song wraps the disco up naturally.
💡 Parent tip
Grippy-soled socks defeat the purpose — plain socks work best for an actual glide.
What your child develops
- Balance and core control — gliding on a low-friction surface trains real stabilising muscles
- Self-expression through movement — inventing moves builds confidence and creativity
- Controlled stopping — learning to stop safely is a genuine motor-planning skill
Safety notes
- Only on non-carpeted floors, fully clear of furniture, rugs, and sharp corners. Not appropriate on stairs or near steps.
