Shadow Tracing

Their shadow becomes a drawing surface. No paper, no pencil, just sun and chalk.

Ages 3–815–40 min1–4 kidsHousehold items

Child stands in bright sunlight while a parent (or older sibling) traces the outline of their shadow onto pavement with chalk. The child then colours it in, adds details, or traces multiple poses and watches how the shadow shifts over time.

What you need

  • chalk

How to do it

  1. 1Find paved surface in direct sun. Best between 9–11am or 3–5pm for long shadows.
  2. 2Child holds a pose. Trace the shadow outline with chalk.
  3. 3Child fills in the outline — clothes, face, shoes. Then strike a second pose.
  4. 4Optional: trace the same shadow an hour later. Watch how much it moved.

Variations

  • If they're not interested: try a simpler version of the activity or move on without pressure. Interest often returns after a break.
  • Wind down with a final round or a cooling-off activity. End before frustration sets in.

💡 Parent tip

Younger children almost always move while being traced. Give them something to hold and a target to look at on the ground. That 10-second stillness is usually enough.

What your child develops

  • Spatial awarenessunderstanding that their body projects a shape in space
  • Observationnoticing how shadow length and angle changes with time
  • Fine motorcolouring within a large irregular outline
