Layer different liquids slowly into a tall glass: golden syrup at the bottom, then coloured water, then cooking oil at the top. They don't mix. Drop in small objects and watch where they settle based on their density.

What you need

tall glass jar
golden syrup
water
cooking oil
food colouring
small objects

How to do it

1Say: "Watch: these three liquids won't mix. Different weights. Heavier stays at the bottom."
2Gently pour coloured water on top, sliding it slowly down the inside wall.
3Gently pour cooking oil on top of the water. Watch the three layers hold.
4Drop in small objects — a raisin, a coin, a grape. Each one lands where its density puts it.

Variations

Korb-Tür: If they won't pour: pour for them. Place objects. "Where do you think that one lands?"
Ausstieg: Drop the last object and watch it settle. That's the ending.

Objects that land between layers are most interesting. Ask: 'Why do you think that one stopped there?' before explaining.
