Pressed Flower Bookmark

Press a flower between dictionary pages for two days and it comes out flat, dry, and perfectly preserved.

Ages 3–1015–20 min1–3 kids

Collect small flat flowers, petals, and leaves from outside. Arrange them on plain paper, cover with a second sheet, and place inside a heavy book for 48 hours. Open to find the specimens flat, dry, and preserved — mount on card, seal with clear tape, and trim to a bookmark. The two-day wait is part of what makes the result feel earned.

What you need

  • flowers, petals, small leaves
  • heavy book
  • card stock
  • clear packing tape
  • glue stick

How to do it

  1. 1Collect small flat flowers, petals, and leaves and say: 'We're going to press these into bookmarks.' Prioritise interesting shapes over quantity.
  2. 2Arrange on plain paper so nothing overlaps. Cover with a second sheet.
  3. 3Close inside a heavy book. Leave 48 hours undisturbed. Opening early ruins the pressing.
  4. 4Mount on card, seal with clear tape, and trim to a bookmark. The wait is what makes it feel earned.

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If they choose flowers that won't press flat (thick petals), include them anyway. They'll press wrinkled, which makes a different but still beautiful bookmark. Variations are discoveries, not failures.
  • Ausstieg: Mark the date clearly on the book: 'We'll find this on Tuesday.' The waiting is the structure. Returning to the book two days later is the ceremony.

💡 Parent tip

The 48-hour wait creates a ritual: put it in the book, mark the date, forget it, find it. Consider placing it in a specific book the child is currently reading. Finding it there is exactly the right kind of surprise.
