Children dance or move freely while music plays. When the music stops, everyone freezes. Anyone who moves is out. The contrast between wild movement and total stillness is the game. Works anywhere there is space to take a few steps.
What you need
- music source or parent's voice for rhythm
How to do it
- 1"Music on — everyone move however you want. Music stops — freeze completely. I'm watching."
- 2Start music or clap a beat. Children move freely — any way they like.
- 3Stop suddenly. Everyone freezes completely. Not almost — completely.
- 4Check for movement. Anyone who moves is out. Restart immediately.
Variations
- Korb-Tür: If children won't dance, dance yourself wildly for five seconds, then stop and freeze. They'll copy.
- Ausstieg: After one player wins, announce "Last round!" and make the freeze-check funny: "Did that kid's nose twitch? Their eyelid? We're not sure."
💡 Parent tip
Stop the music at irregular intervals. Some very short (3 seconds), some longer (20+ seconds). The unpredictability keeps children fully alert.
What your child develops
- Inhibitory control — stopping a physical action instantly on a signal
- Body awareness — becoming suddenly aware of each body part when it must freeze
- Cardiovascular exercise — brief bursts of full-body movement
Safety notes
- Clear any furniture from the play area.
