Marble Run From Cardboard

Cut tubes into ramps, tape them to the wall, and rebuild every time the marble falls off.

Cut toilet roll tubes and cardboard into channels. Tape them to a door or wall at angles so a marble rolls from one to the next without falling. The engineering challenge is implicit: does it work? If not, why not? They'll rebuild it 10 times before stopping.

What you need

  • toilet roll tubes
  • cardboard
  • masking tape
  • marble or small ball

How to do it

  1. 1Cut three or four toilet roll tubes lengthwise to make channels and say: 'Let's build a track for the marble.' Tape the first to the door at a downward angle.
  2. 2Place the marble. Watch where it goes. That tells you where the next channel needs to be.
  3. 3Tape the second channel below and to the side, angled to catch the marble from the first.
  4. 4Keep extending. Each failed run shows exactly what needs fixing. That is the lesson.

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If they're frustrated after a failed run, run it yourself and narrate what you see: 'It rolled too fast and went sideways here. If we angle this one more, it might catch it.' Show it as a puzzle to solve together, not a failure.
  • Ausstieg: When energy is fading, run one final successful marble from top to bottom together and say, 'Let's leave the track up and run it one more time tomorrow.' The construction stays; closure is deferred.

💡 Parent tip

The only rule is that the marble must travel under gravity. No pushing. This single constraint turns play into engineering.
