Kitchen Scale Challenge

Hold eight kitchen objects and sort them by weight using only your hands — then see how accurate you were.

Eight to ten kitchen objects of varied sizes and densities are lined up. The child holds each briefly and arranges them from lightest to heaviest by feel alone, writing the order down. Then each goes on the kitchen scale. Dense small objects consistently fool even adults — the child learns that weight and size are different things through the discrepancy, not through an explanation.

What you need

  • kitchen scale
  • 8–10 objects of varying weight and size: tin can, apple, bag of crisps, potato, wooden spoon, egg, lemon, jar of honey

How to do it

  1. 1Say: "Hold these and sort them from lightest to heaviest. Just your hands, no scale. Write the order down."
  2. 2Hold each briefly. Without the scale, arrange them lightest to heaviest. Write the order down.
  3. 3Now weigh each one and record the grams. Compare with what your hands predicted.
  4. 4Ask: which one surprised you most? Why do you think your hands got that wrong?

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If they're uncertain: "Best guess. We'll see how close your hands are."
  • Ausstieg: Weigh each one. Compare with their prediction. The surprise is the lesson.

💡 Parent tip

Include one small metal tin and one large cereal box. The box looks substantial and is nearly weightless; the tin feels negligible and is heavy. This contrast produces the clearest learning moment.
