Kitchen Orchestra

Six kitchen objects, six different sounds, and thirty seconds to compose something worth performing.

Ages 3–1015–35 min1–3 kidsHousehold items

Six kitchen objects are chosen for their sound: a pot lid struck with a spoon, a whisk shaken, rice in a sealed jar, two wooden spoons hit together, a glass tapped with a knife handle, a bag of flour patted firmly. The child arranges them, tests each one, and composes a short piece. The parent is the audience. Making instruments from what is already in the kitchen changes what instruments mean.

What you need

  • 6 kitchen objects that make different sounds

How to do it

  1. 1Say: "These six kitchen things make different sounds. Arrange them, compose a short piece, and perform it once."
  2. 2Arrange them in playing order. Ten minutes to compose something worth performing once.
  3. 3One performance. One take. You are the audience.
  4. 4Record it on a phone and play it back. Let them decide if it needs improving.

Variations

  • Korb-Tür: If they won't compose: listen together to the sounds first. "Pick your favourite two. Now your least favourite. Now make a pattern."
  • Ausstieg: One performance. One take. You are the audience. Record and play back if they want.

💡 Parent tip

Watch the whole performance without interrupting. No adjusting the objects while they play, no suggestions. Five minutes of complete audience attention is more valuable to a child than any feedback. The piece is theirs.
