I Spy — Anywhere Edition

The oldest waiting-room trick in the book because it genuinely works every single time.

Ages 3–105–20 min2–4 kidsHousehold items

I Spy needs no preparation, no materials, and no particular environment. It works in a doctor's waiting room, a supermarket checkout line, a restaurant, or the back seat. The game is the conversation.

How to do it

  1. 1Player 1 picks any visible object and names one clue: its colour, its first letter, or its shape.
  2. 2Everyone guesses freely. No hands raised, no turn order. The noise is part of it.
  3. 3Whoever guesses correctly becomes the next spy. The game runs itself from there.
  4. 4For older kids: two clues at once, or limit guessing to yes/no questions only.

Variations

  • If someone refuses to guess or shouts random answers, keep playing anyway — the game self-corrects.
  • When energy drops, announce: 'Last round — then we're done.' Make the final guess decisive.

💡 Parent tip

Start as the spy so they learn the format clearly, then hand over control. They'll run the game themselves from round two onwards.
