How Far Can You Throw?

Pinecone, leaf, stone, stick. Each flies differently and they won't figure it out by thinking.

Ages 3–1010–20 min1–4 kidsHousehold items

Collect 4 different natural objects: a pinecone, a flat stone, a large leaf, a straight stick. Line up and throw each one. Which goes furthest? Predict first, then test. The leaf always surprises everyone.

How to do it

  1. 1Collect one each: pinecone, flat stone, large leaf, straight stick.
  2. 2Predict before throwing. Which goes furthest? Which least? Say it aloud so it counts.
  3. 3Everyone throws the same object from the same line at once. Same conditions, real result.
  4. 4Do all four objects. The leaf always surprises everyone.

Variations

  • If they don't want to participate: "I'll throw once. You just watch." Model the action solo first.
  • End naturally when energy drops or the activity reaches a natural stopping point. No announcement needed — just drift to the next thing.

💡 Parent tip

The leaf is the guaranteed laugh. It goes sideways, backwards, or just stops. Throw it last so the drama builds across the first three objects.

Safety notes

  • Check the area is clear of people. Sticks should be thrown overarm and away from faces.
