Balloon Launch

Blow it up, pinch it closed, stand at the line, and let go — whose flies furthest?

Ages 4–105–20 min2–10 kidsHousehold items

Each child blows up their own balloon, pinches the end without tying, and stands at the same line. On the count of three, everyone releases at once. The balloon that travels furthest wins. Since no two fly the same way twice, every rematch feels entirely fair.

What you need

  • 1 balloon per player
  • chalk or a stick for the start line

How to do it

  1. 1Each player blows their balloon as full as they can and pinches it shut — no tying.
  2. 2Everyone lines up behind the same mark. On three, release at once. No throwing.
  3. 3Mark where each balloon lands with a stone or chalk dot.
  4. 4Furthest landing wins the round. Best of five.

Variations

  • If they're not interested: try a simpler version of the activity or move on without pressure. Interest often returns after a break.
  • End naturally when energy drops or the activity reaches a natural stopping point. No announcement needed — just drift to the next thing.

💡 Parent tip

Play on a still day for clean distances. On a windy day the chaos doubles the fun — keep that version for when you need big energy burned fast.

What your child develops

  • Lung capacity and breath controlinflating fully takes more effort than expected
  • Basic physics: more air equals more thrust, but also harder to hold without tying
  • Unpredictability as a feature: random outcomes mean no single child dominates

Safety notes

  • Burst balloon pieces are a choking hazard for children under 3. Collect all pieces immediately after play.
